District Update: Speaking Up

October 5, 2015

Dear Friends,

Texas is a pro-life state, and we’ve worked together to pass landmark pro-life legislation in recent years. Unfortunately, some of these efforts are at risk.

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court begins hearing oral arguments for its fall session, and one case they’re expected to take up in the coming weeks is Whole Woman’s Health v. Cole. In this case, a group of abortion clinics are suing the State of Texas over common sense provisions of the pro-life omnibus bill we passed in 2013 to improve the standard of medical care in abortion facilities. It really does beg the question, why would anyone be against higher standards and better care?

Last night, I had the opportunity to appear on NBC Nightly News and discuss this issue before a national audience. To watch this brief news clip, please click on the image below.

The law we passed here in Texas simply says abortion facilities need to meet the same minimum standards as other outpatient surgical centers, or “ambulatory surgical centers,” and that abortion doctors must have admitting privileges at a local hospital in case of complications requiring additional medical attention.

I will continue to speak up about the importance of maintaining these laws, and I hope you’ll join me by sharing this information with your friends, family, and neighbors. Thank you for standing for life!

Sincerely,

Kelly Hancock
State Senator, District 9
