Capitol Update: A Special Bill…

May 4, 2015

Dear Friends,

The Texas Senate continues to pass big legislation.

For instance, SB 3 moved from the Senate to the House last week with bipartisan support. This bill builds a border security operation that Texans can count on to reduce crime and increase public safety.

But today, I’d like to tell you about another bill – one that’s particularly special to me.

I recently had the privilege of welcoming our family’s good friend Colby Bannister to Austin to testify in support of a piece of legislation I authored. SB 272 would allow Texans to make a voluntary contribution to the Special Olympics Texas fund when renewing your motor vehicle registration.

This bill is simple, but to the 51,000-plus Texan athletes who participate in the Special Olympics, it’s also very significant.

Colby knows from experience! He proudly represented Texas and our nation as part of Team USA in the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece. He was one of just two male gymnasts from the U.S. to qualify for the games, and he did a great job.

He did an equally terrific job testifying before the Senate this month. I am proud to work with Colby and his friends and family on this meaningful piece of legislation. While I consider every day of service in the Texas Senate to be a privilege, days spent making a difference with friends like Colby are priceless.

Thank you for allowing me to represent you in Austin.

Sincerely,

Kelly Hancock
State Senator, District 9
