Capitol Update: The Board is Set

March 6, 2015

Dear Friends,

The Texas Legislature is in full swing. Here are some highlights from the past week.

Committee Assignments

Committee assignments have been handed down in both the House and Senate, and I am pleased to share that I will serve as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Administration for the 84th Legislature. I also sit on the Finance, Transportation, and Natural Resources and Economic Development Committees.

Finance is keeping us busy this month with drafting the state government’s operating budget for the next biennium. We meet regularly to hear from each state agency and go over their funding requests. A common theme from these hearings: It is time to have a very serious discussion about state and local debt.

Caucus Chairmanships

My Republican colleagues have selected me to serve as Chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus this session. I look forward to working diligently on common sense, conservative issues with Vice-Chairman Brandon Creighton and other members of the Caucus. We know the people of Texas have spoken loud and clear about the way our state government should function, and we intend to act.

I also received the Chairman’s gavel for the House and Senate’s joint Tourism Caucus last week. This caucus exists to focus on economic development and tourism opportunities throughout our state. Texas’ diverse landscapes, exciting attractions, and first-rate dining and entertainment districts make tourism an important economic driver for our state.

Hearing from You

A number of groups from Senate District 9 have visited the state capitol recently, including a delegation of business and community leaders from the Arlington and HEB Chambers of Commerce; elementary school principals from Arlington ISD, Irving ISD, and Keller ISD; and administrators from Grand Prairie ISD and Northwest ISD. Thank you to everyone who made the trip to Austin and stopped by to speak with me or my staff.

Kelly Hancock
State Senator, District 9
