The Austin-based anti-tax group Empower Texans PAC, has a reputation for taking sides in Republican primaries and pulling no punches in its attacks.
In a video posted online today previewing the 2010 primary ballot, the group's leader weighs in on four Tarrant County races and suggests only one has an incumbent worth keeping.
In the five-minute video, CEO Michael Quinn Sullivan tours the state's Republican primary match-ups and picks the "Races to Watch." In North Texas, he includes the state house districts currently represented by Republican state Reps. Kelly Hancock of North Richland Hills, Vicki Truitt of Southlake, and Todd Smith of Euless.
Sullivan calls Hancock "a taxpayer champion" and says his opponent, former North Richland Hills Mayor Charles Scoma, is "not exactly our kind of candidate."
Sullivan doesn't heap similar praise on Smith or Truitt (the group recently launched an online attack ad against Truitt).
Regarding the Republican primary for District 96, currently held by Democrat Chris Turner, Sullivan mentions former state Rep. Bill Zedler's effort to win back the seat but ignores his primary opponent, former Arlington city councilwoman Barbara Nash.
Curiously, Sullivan leaves off his list the Republican primary in District 99 between state Rep. Charlie Geren and Fort Worth Attorney Matt Krause. Sullivan has in the past been one of Geren's strongest critics and endorsed his primary opponent in 2008.
